I don’t want to talk too long, so I’ll start by telling you about the 5 biggest photography mistakes I made when I started!
1. Check your settings every time you take a picture!
I know it is frustrating, and you will need some time to adjust to doing it, BUT you don’t want to have blurred pictures just because you didn’t check your shutter speed! Make sure you check your settings every time you change your position!
2. Don’t cover every type of photo-shooting!
Obviously you want to learn, and get as much practice as possible, and that’s good! BUT, don’t try to master every type of photo shooting. Instead, try to concentrate just on family shootings, newborn shootings, or maternity shootings at first. But do not try to start with weddings or large event photography before you try out the other types first. Take it slow in the beginning!
Practice makes perfect!
3. Invest in one good camera and one good lens!
If I told you, that I am only shooting with one lens, and it was the one I got in the very beginning, you wouldn’t believe it! But it’s true! I still shoot with my 35mm Sigma Art. MY one and only! I tried to get comfortable shooting with another one, but I still prefer the Sigma Art the most! Even my wedding pictures! All taken by a 35mm. You don’t have to invest in 400 different lenses.
4. Watch Youtube and learn Lightroom and Photoshop basics!
Yes guys, if you know how to edit, you will grow! Your editing is your signature! Shoot RAW and you can most likely fix a very bad, OOC (out of camera) picture! How? With Lightroom or photoshop! If you underexpose, you can fix it in photoshop! It is a magic tool that does not let you down! Just make sure to ALWAYS shoot in RAW!
I am not saying you can fix everything, BUT most likely you can fix beginner mistakes! And it is ok to make mistakes, YOU will learn and you will grow AND most important, you won’t do it again!
5. Don’t give up
I know, it will be rough, frustrating and you want to give up at one point, BUT here’s the thing! Don’t give up, it will take some time, and you will learn to understand it. If it would be easy everybody would be a photographer. So keep on learning, and watch lots of YouTube videos!
